By Fitzrovia Talent ·

In brief

From bestseller to stage

David Nicholls’ One Day was published in 2009 by Hodder & Stoughton and was named the 2010 Galaxy Book of the Year. (Wikipedia, One Day (novel); Hachette UK) The producers say it has sold over five million copies worldwide and has inspired both film and television adaptations. (Melting Pot cast announcement, via Nimax Theatres) They include the Netflix series starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod. (Playbill)

The story begins on 15 July 1988, St Swithin’s Day, when Emma and Dexter meet on the night of their graduation in Edinburgh. Over the next twenty years we return to them on the same day each year. (Royal Lyceum Theatre; The Guardian)

Producer Simon Friend of Melting Pot has said he started reading the novel on the Tube in 2009 and spent more than a decade trying to produce a stage adaptation. (Royal Lyceum Theatre)

A world premiere in Edinburgh

The musical had its world premiere at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, the city where Em and Dex’s story begins, with a press night on 11 March 2026. It was part of the Lyceum’s 60th anniversary season, the first programmed by artistic director James Brining. (Royal Lyceum Theatre) Because of demand, the run was extended by two weeks to 19 April 2026, and the production included on-stage seating for audiences. (Theatre and Tonic)

In Edinburgh, Freya Catrin Smith was credited with additional material. (Royal Lyceum Theatre) For the West End, additional material is credited to Jeremy Sams. (London Theatre)

The West End transfer

The transfer to the Garrick Theatre was announced on 18 June 2026, with Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose confirmed to return as Dex and Em. (London Theatre; Playbill)

Muscato’s theatre credits include Cabaret (Playhouse Theatre), The Great Gatsby (London Coliseum) and Moulin Rouge! The Musical (Piccadilly Theatre). Rose’s include Sylvia (Old Vic) and Hamilton (Victoria Palace Theatre). (Melting Pot cast announcement) Muscato received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812 at the Donmar Warehouse. (Nimax Theatres)
