RENT RETURNS TO THE WEST END AT THE TOM STOPPARD THEATRE.

By Fitzrovia Talent ·

In brief

A 30th-anniversary West End return

Thirty years after Rent redefined musical theatre on Broadway, Jonathan Larson's rock musical is back in London in a new production directed by Olivier Award winner Luke Sheppard (Paddington The Musical, & Juliet). (RENT official site; Playbill)

Inspired by Puccini's La Bohème, the show follows a group of young artists and friends in New York's East Village as they navigate love, ambition, poverty and the AIDS epidemic. (RENT official site; Playbill)

Chris Harper Productions and Sonia Friedman Productions present the show with Winkler & Smalberg and Julie Larson, in association with Hope Mill Theatre. Sheppard's staging grew out of his 2020 Hope Mill Theatre production in Manchester. (Playbill)

Opening night and the booking extension

Performances began on 26 September 2026. Opening night was 8 October 2026. Ahead of that opening, producers announced tickets on sale further into 2027; British Theatre lists the run as booking until 29 May 2027. (British Theatre; Playbill)

The venue is the newly renamed Tom Stoppard Theatre on St Martin's Lane (WC2N 4BG), the former Duke of York's Theatre. ATG Entertainment unveiled the new name in September 2026 as a tribute to Sir Tom Stoppard. (Sonia Friedman Productions; BBC News)

For this Rent, the auditorium has been reconfigured in the round, so seating differs from the theatre's usual layout. (RENT official site; British Theatre)

Broadway legacy and earlier London runs

Larson completed Rent shortly before his death in January 1996. The show opened Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop, transferred to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre on 29 April 1996, won four Tony Awards including Best Musical, and received the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The original Broadway run closed on 7 September 2008 after 5,123 performances. (Playbill)

London first saw Rent at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1998, with a later West End staging, Rent Remixed, in 2007. (Playbill)
